Before You Sit Down With Anyone

Arrive with your own list. The conversation changes completely when you are the one asking.

Write down what you have noticed and roughly when, in your own words, before you go. Not a diagnosis — a description. Bring an honest account of your week: how much time you spend outdoors, what you already use, what you have tried before and how it went, and anything in your medical history that a professional would need. Volunteer the parts you would rather skip. Being incomplete with someone who is trying to advise you only costs you.

Then bring your own questions. What are you actually recommending and why that rather than something else. What would you say if I did nothing. What does this require of me afterward, and for how long. What happens if I start and then stop. What would make you tell me this is not a good idea. Those five turn a sales conversation into a consultation, and the quality of the answers tells you a great deal about where you are sitting.

Set expectations before you go, too. No one can tell you how your skin will look, and anyone who speaks with certainty about that is telling you about their sales process rather than your face. Nothing available makes anybody younger. If what you hear instead is a frank description of what a thing does, what it does not do, and what it asks of you, you are in a better room than most.
