Skin is a long subject. Almost every disappointment in this category comes from approaching it as a single errand.
People usually arrive at this subject at a moment — a photograph they did not like, a birthday, a comment. The instinct is to find the one thing that addresses the moment. That framing is the source of most regret here, because the underlying subject does not work on the timescale of an appointment. Skin keeps changing afterward, for the same reasons it was changing before.
A useful plan is honest about three budgets: money, time and attention. Attention is the one people forget. A routine with many steps is abandoned faster than a routine with two, and the routine you actually keep for years is worth more than the ambitious one you keep for a month. Same with anything that requires returning on a schedule — before committing, work out what happens if you stop, because life will eventually make that decision for you.
It also helps to decide what you are optimizing for and to write it down in plain language. Comfort. Not thinking about it. Protecting against damage you would rather not accumulate. Those are different goals with different answers, and a person who has not named theirs is easy to sell to. Nothing here is about becoming younger — that is not something on offer from anyone. It is about deciding what you want to spend on a thing that will keep happening either way.
